2 CONC when my father was struck with tuburculosus and in 1932 he left for the 
2 CONC Sanatarium which was located near pontiac. I have obtained the hospital 
2 CONC records. He was in the hospital from 8/24/32 to 4/13/33. His residence at 
2 CONC the time of admission was 71 Mohawk according to the hospital records. 
2 CONC This was when I was two years old.
2 CONT  After the hospital he later joined A.C. McClurg Co. in Chicago and was 
2 CONC transferred to Texas. We lived there in 1937-28 and then returned to 
2 CONC Chicago. He was separated from Sylvia and later divorced. DRG

1 NOTE !Biography Mother was very attached to her father and talked often of him 
2 CONC to me during her lifetime. His death hurt her deeply and she still felt 
2 CONC it as long as she lived. She met my father in Pontiac. She had came to 
2 CONC Pontiac to go to secretarial school and had stayed with her two aunts who 
2 CONC were her Mothers sisters. During her stay she went into Brown Brothers 
2 CONC Office and Book supply store on Saganaw St. My father was working there 
2 CONC at the time for My Grandfather who was a partner in owning the store. 
2 CONC They met and the story as told to me by my aunt was that Mother then made 
2 CONC excuses to come in and buy supplies and pencils at all occasions. 
2 CONT When I was born they lived near my Grandfather and had a nice home that 
2 CONC was newly built.

1 NOTE The initial information was given to me by Charles Gerue my first cousin 
2 CONC and was given to me on about 5/20/93. He said the name of the Great 
2 CONC Grandfather was pronounced like Jaun or John and spelled Jean Baptiste 
2 CONC Gerue and that he could speak only french and no english at all. This 
2 CONC information was given to him by his father, Homer Gerue.

2 CONT The 1910 Michigan Soundex Census gives his name as John B.. He is listed 
2 CONC as 82 years old, (Born 1828 or 9)  born in Canada and lives with his wife 
2 CONC Ellen 68 years old, also from Canada, and a son Louis who is 42 and born 
2 CONC in Michigan
2 CONT 
2 CONT The 1910 census indicates that He and his wife were married in 1865 and 
2 CONC emmigrated to the US the same year. The language spoken was english which 
2 CONC is in opposition to aural history but it could be that the command of 
2 CONC english was not too good. It lists his Father as Canadain\French and His 
2 CONC Mother as Canadian\ English.

2 CONT 28 June 1993 1880 MI Soundex Lists seven children. David is the youngest 
2 CONC at four months.
2 CONT His Obituary states "95 years old, a resident of Detroit for 80 years, 
2 CONC died at his home, 5631 24th st Thursday night. He came from Quebec in 
2 CONC 1844. He was a dock builder and superintendant of the A.J. Dupuis dock 
2 CONC building company for more than 80 years (sic). Mr Gerue was one of the 
2 CONC men who helped lay the foundation for the city hall in 1868. His family 
2 CONC includes four daughters and three sons."  There is a picture in the 
2 CONC obituary which was found at the Detroit Public Library. Burton

2 CONT DRG 2/11/1997 There is a family with a JB born in 1838 with a father 
2 CONC named Jean Baptiste and two sons named Frank and JB. If the birthdate is 
2 CONC ignored that could be the one.

2 CONT The death cerificate shows Oakford, Quebec as the place of birth but 
2 CONC research shows that there is no Oakford and that John Baptiste and his 
2 CONC wife Ellen Hayes were re-married in a Catholic Church in Beauport Quebec 
2 CONC and the marriage notes show that this was Ellens home. Therefore I

2 CONT Talked to Faye Donelson on 6/22/93. She added the following notes about 
2 CONC D.J. Gerue.
2 CONT He worked for Kresgee   in Detroit and after coming to Pontiac Faye 
2 CONC remembers that he was the Manager of Kresgee  in Pontiac. He later worked 
2 CONC in or managed the wallpaper department in Brown Brothers. This was then 
2 CONC owned by two brothers named Brown. Later they were no longer around. 
2 CONC According to the fellow who bought my Grandfathers interest in the store 
2 CONC from Lottie in 1945, David bought a half interest in the store. He said 
2 CONC that David was a real gentlemen and that in all the time he knew him he 
2 CONC was a man that everyone liked to know and that he was honest and 
2 CONC trustworthy.

2 CONT The funeral of A. B. Donaldson aged 77, who died at his home on the 
2 CONC Rising Sun Stock Farm, just outside of Pontiac, Tuesday afternoon, will 
2 CONC be held Friday afternoon from the M.E. church of Pontiac.Mr. Donaldson 
2 CONC was one of the Pioneer residents in the vicinity of Pontiac,having been 
2 CONC born on the Rising Sun Farm and lived there all his life. He was well 
2 CONC known both to the people of Pontiac and Detroit as one of the foremost 
2 CONC horse raisers in this vicinity.  A widow, two sons, William and Mark, and 
2 CONC a daughter, Mrs Ida Walters, of Detroit Survive him.

2 CONT 6/22/93 Faye Donelson said that her Granfather Azra Donelson had the 
2 CONC finest trotting horses in the US and that he was well known througout the 
2 CONC United States.Her Father Mark Donelson used to take the horses by rail

2 CONC earth. Too mean to be around. A big man over six foot. He intimidated 
2 CONC people and beat his wife badly. He was reputed to beat his wife Martha in 
2 CONC the presence of the children by pulling her dress over her head and 
2 CONC stringing her up by her arms and beating her with a whip.

1 NOTE DEATH:  She is buried in the Kersey Family Cemetery. It is located near 
2 CONC Kite GA. The directions are as follows. A road runs parallel to the Kite 
2 CONC - Wrightsville Road and is one block towards route 80. This road leaves 
2 CONC US 221 near the center of Kite and proceeds west. The corner where you 
2 CONC start has an abandoned Coloston Store on the corner. Proceed 1.5 miles 
2 CONC West to a Field road.
2 CONT  This road proceeds South across a farm field for .7 miles to the top of 
2 CONC a small hill. The cemetery is located at the top of the hill. There is no 
2 CONC stone for Martha but when Alice visited the cemetery some years ago 
2 CONC (About 1960 or later) with Elgie Ree Mimbs, she stated to Emory Mimbs 
2 CONC when she returned that there were marker stones at the head and foot of 
2 CONC the grave. When Ed Mimbs, Emory Mimbs and Don Gerue, went to the 
2 CONC graveyard in early May 1993 we found that there were such stones only in 
2 CONC one place and that was towards the center of the cemetery and  in line 
2 CONC with the grave of Joseph Kersey.  The family member who takes care of the 
2 CONC graveyard is Mr. Arly Kersey. His address is Box 46 Kite Route One, Kite 
2 CONC Ga 31049. His Telephone is 912-469-5171 Death date is after the 1910 
2 CONC census as she is listed with her husband and daughter Alice in that 
2 CONC census. The remarriage date of her husband after her death would confirm 
2 CONC a tighter bracket on her death but is must be soon after the census as 
2 CONC her daughter Alice said that she died while she was a child and she was 
2 CONC already 16 in 1910 DRG 11/95
2 CONT 4/4/96 A note compiled from records of Elgie Ree Mimbs gives a death date 
2 CONC of May 9, 1910. The year corresponds to our best estimates.

2 CONT 12/30/1994 Rita and Don Gerue  purchased a headstone for Martha. In 
2 CONC looking at the dates it would appear that the best estimate of a death 
2 CONC date would be 1908 as this meets the other requirements best. i.e.  1 
2 CONC Alice was still not grown (age 14)
2 CONT 2. This is two and a half years before Alices Marriage 3. It is before 
2 CONC the second marriage of her husband i.e. prior to January 1911. In this 
2 CONC case it would be about two years before his remarriage.

2 CONT Her husband Joe Hall was a brute to his wife. There are a lot of storie 
2 CONC about this man. He was said to be the devil on earth. Too mean to be 
2 CONC around. A big man over six foot. He intimidated people and beat his wife 
2 CONC badly. He was reputed to beat his wife Martha in the presence of the 
2 CONC children by pulling her dress over her head and stringing her up by her 
2 CONC arms and beating her with a whip.
2 CONT -Alice told Rita and DG that her mother, on her death bed, made a last 
2 CONC wish that she be buried on one side on the Ohoopie swamp and "that son of 
2 CONC a bitch of a husband" on the other. That is what occurred. His body is at 
2 CONC Poplar Springs near that of his second wife, (unmarked but Emory Mimbs 
2 CONC was absolutely sure of the location and pointed it out to those who 
2 CONC wanted to know where to bury his second wife). and she is in in the 
2 CONC Kersey cemetary on the other side of the swamp. This was about as far 
2 CONC away as you could get in those days.

2 CONC show his birth date are the Emanuel County census.Rumor has it that he 
2 CONC cut his leg off to avoid Civil War service.He is supposed to have called 
2 CONC himself "Nigger Baby." VJ's Uncle James says that Peg-Leg was arrested 
2 CONC and jailed in Swainsboro for vagrancy even though he always carried alot 
2 CONC of money with him. The next morning when the jailer came to let him go, 
2 CONC he sat down, crossed his legs, folded his arms and announed, "This nigger 
2 CONC baby ain't going nowhere until he's paid for his inconvience."

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: VJ Hasn't found John B. Kersey in the 1860 Census. It may be 
2 CONC that I've (VJ) overlooked him or haven't looked in the right county.
2 CONT There is something strange about the census entries for John B. Kersey. 
2 CONC The 1870 Emanuel County census list John B. and his family in the 46th 
2 CONC District; Household #168. In the next household, #169 is Zilphia Bullard, 
2 CONC whom VJ thinks John B later married. In Zilphia's household is a Unicy 
2 CONC Kersey, famale, age 10.
2 CONT  Then in the 1880 Emanuel County census John B. and Sara are listed with 
2 CONC a daughter Elizabeth, age 30, a daughter, Celia, age 24; and a daughter 
2 CONC Nicey, age 22.
2 CONT Where was Elizabeth in 1870? Had she married and moved out and then moved 
2 CONC back in? What was her married name? 
2 CONT Is this Nicey that showed up in 1880 the Unicy Kersey that was in Zilphia 
2 CONC Bullards household in 1870.
2 CONT VJ has  a strong feeling that Zilphia had other connections to the 
2 CONC Kerseys, but she doesn't know that it was. Could she have been a Kersey 
2 CONC before she bacame a Bullard? Shad an Amos, age 2, that VJ assumes was her 
2 CONC son. She needs to find Zilphia in the 1880 Census.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The John Kersey family was in Emanuel County in 1820 along 
2 CONC with a Thomas Kersey family and a James Kersey family. VJ doesn't know if 
2 CONC these families were related. The John Kersey family is the only one that 
2 CONC James D. Kersey and his brothers would fit into. Also, my great-aunt Ruby 
2 CONC shepard, a granddaughter of James D. said that her mother , Jane Kersey 
2 CONC Sheppard told her that John Kersey came from Spain and that his wife 
2 CONC Nancy sailed from England on her 14th birthday. VJ doesn't believe that 
2 CONC part about them coming from Spain and England because the 1850 and 1860 
2 CONC Emanuel County census  states that John was born in North Carolina and 
2 CONC that Nancy was born in South Carolina. But I (VJ) won't be the one to 
2 CONC tell Aunt Ruby that her story is not right.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: VJ took the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 Emanuel County census 
2 CONC and worked up a family for John and Nancy Kersey. VJ has four "Name 
2 CONC unknown" daughters  in there because by 1850 when they started listing 
2 CONC names, these daughters were married and gone or dead and gone. There is 
2 CONC also a gap of 11 years between a daughter born in 1814 and John B. born 
2 CONC in 1825.VJ doesn't know if she's missing something or if there were 
2 CONC children that died. Probably both. In the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census Eli 
2 CONC Johnson and his wife Nicy lived next to the Kerseys in Emanuel Co.VJ 
2 CONC believes that Nicy was one of John's daughters. Her age in 1860 was 48 
2 CONC and that would make her fit the child number 5 slot. Another reason she 
2 CONC wants to make her a Kersey is that when John and Nancy disappeared from 
2 CONC the Census between 1860 and 1870 their daughter Eliza showed up in Eli's 
2 CONC household in 1870. Then in 1880 a strange thing happened. James D. Kersey 
2 CONC was living in Johnson County with his second wife, Malinda Jane Rowland.
2 CONT  Eli Johnson was living right down the road and married to James D.'s 
2 CONC first wife, Mary Burris. We know this is the same Mary, because we have a 
2 CONC deed showing where she gave a plot of land to her daughter Pollie.

1 NOTE **FDMVA Isaac's father in law, William Nathan Terry was a native of Conn. 
2 CONC and served as a private from March 1774 as a member of Captain Ransom's 
2 CONC of Penn, Troop in Colonel Butler's Regiment. He faught at bunker hill in 
2 CONC 1775 and served until 1782. While on furlough, he faught in the battle of 
2 CONC Wyoming with his father Parshall. He applied for his pension in 1828. It 
2 CONC was granted and he died in 1840. His wife Eleanor applied then for a 
2 CONC continuation of his pension but was refused. She died on 20 aug 1849. He 
2 CONC also faught at the battle of Princeton.
2 CONT Isaac's mother died when he was born and his father when he was 
2 CONC fourteen.His sister Eleanor and her husband, Harve Seeley, took him under 
2 CONC their wing and when they moved to MI in 1822 he came with them. They came 
2 CONC with a group of emigrants to Oakland Co. MI, which was first opened to 
2 CONC settlement in 1817 when it was still a part of the North West Territory.
2 CONT They traveled by wagon. It is reported that Isaac made his bed under the 
2 CONC wagon while the Seeley family slept in the Wagon above until they could 
2 CONC erect a log cabin. At that time deer and wild game were plentiful. 
2 CONC Passenger Pidgeons flew over in great numbers. Indians frequented all 
2 CONC parts of the County but for the most part they were peaceful.
2 CONT Isaac was industrious and very frugal. He earned a dollar a cord 
2 CONC splitting wood for neighbors who did not have time to split their own 
2 CONC wood. In 1825, when Isaac was nineteen, he bought 160 acres of government 
2 CONC land for $1.00 an acre, in section 35 of Waterford township. He built a 
2 CONC log cabin with a bark and shake roof on the north shores of Sylvan lake 
2 CONC (timber). Their wedding was reported to be the first wedding in the 
2 CONC township. Lucy their first child, was the first white child born in 
2 CONC Waterford township.

2 CONT Oral tradition from an uncle of Earl and Gloria Morgan is that the Morgan 
2 CONC name came from the Nancy D. and that David Lee was a love child. The 
2 CONC father may have a surname of Lowe or Lodge and was a transient on the way 
2 CONC to Texas. There is no other confirmation of this tradition. However a 
2 CONC link to the father of David has not yet been found 7/17/93.

2 CONT Nancy D. is not in the 1850 Warren Census but there is a Mary D. Morgan 
2 CONC listed in this census in household 878, but her age is listed as 18 and 
2 CONC it should be 40. The age is wrong and the name is wrong. She is in the 
2 CONC Story household.

2 CONT 12/93 Marriage records for Warren County Ga. show the marriage of Nancy 
2 CONC Olive to a James Morgan on 1 May 1845. This could be the source of the 
2 CONC Morgan name. It may be that David Lee took the name Morgan when his 
2 CONC mother married a Morgan when he was about five years old. Rita's uncle 
2 CONC confirmed that it was known that there was no legitimate father for David 
2 CONC Lee and that he understood that his mother was Nancy Olive. We 
2 CONC particularly asked about the name "Olive" and he recognized it as the 
2 CONC probable name of David's mother

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: Nathan William Terry was a revolutionary war soldier who is 
2 CONC listed in the records of the Daughters of the American revolution and 
2 CONC through him Faye Mildred Donelson joined the Daughters of the American 
2 CONC Revolution. Of course all direct decendents of Nathan William Terry are 
2 CONC eligible to become either Daughters or Sons of the American Revolution.

2 CONT Faye Donelson notes say that he and his wife Nellie were natives of 
2 CONC Terrytown ( possibly Terrryville) New York. They had eleven children. The 
2 CONC eldest was Sarah, the mother of Mr Voorhees.
2 CONT  However Faye Donelson's records as deliniated in "My Van Voorhees 
2 CONC Ancestors says the following about Nathan William Terry. 
2 CONT "was a native of Connecticut and served as a Private from March of 1774 
2 CONC as a member in Colonel Butler's Regiment. He fought at Bunker Hill in 
2 CONC 1775 and served until 1782. While on furlough, he fought in the battle of 
2 CONC Wyoming with his Father Parshall. He applied for his pension in 1828. It 
2 CONC was granted and he died in 1840. His wife Elenor applied for a 
2 CONC continuation of his pension but was refused. She died on 20 August 1849. 
2 CONC He also fought at the battle of Princton."

1 NOTE In 1827 at the age of 37 with four children aged 11, 9, 6, and 2. Ira and 
2 CONC his wife decided to seek their fortune in Michigan. They made their way 
2 CONC overland from Colrain to Buffalo NY where they took a private schooner 
2 CONC with several other families. They arrived in Detroit nine days later. 
2 CONC There he bought a wagon and a team of oxen and made their way to Pontiac 
2 CONC by an Indian trail. He purchased 160 acres of land in section 25 and 26. 
2 CONC Ten acres had already been cleared by the original owner. They built a 
2 CONC log cabin 18ft. by 24ft.in which they lived for eleven years. In 1838 he 
2 CONC built a frame house that was home to three Donelson families until 1921. 
2 CONC He planted the first orchard in Waterford Township in the fall of 1827. 
2 CONC He planted them among the stumps where they continued to bear until the 
2 CONC 1930's when they were cut down to make way for a sub-division on the west 
2 CONC side of Vorhees and Elizibeth lake road.
2 CONT He tought school that first winter at the school at the corner of Scott 
2 CONC lake and Elizibeth lake Rd. By the summer of 1828 Ira and Mary and some 
2 CONC of the neigbors felt the need of a church. the Ohio Methodist Conference 
2 CONC was contacted and on an appropriate Sunday the Reverend William Snow came 
2 CONC helped the twelve persons present become an established Sunday School. 
2 CONC The two oldest Donelson boys, Horace L. 12, and Abel 10 helped to make 
2 CONC the twelve. They continued to meet in the Donelson cabin until 1830 when 
2 CONC they moved to a red school house at sight of the present all saints 
2 CONC Episcopal Church at Pike and Williams St.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The church was a dominant force in their lives. They were especially 
2 CONC prowd of their two sons who became Methodist Ministers.

2 CONC their son Roelof. The family moved to the Mohawk country in upstate NY at 
2 CONC the time the war began (1776?) lived near Johnstown for five years, then 
2 CONC moved to the Mohawk river on the place of Major Fonda for one year. In 
2 CONC April 1781 they returned to New Jersey and lived about two miles from New 
2 CONC Brunswick.

1 NOTE Notes of Gloria Morgan from conversations with Roston Morgan indicate
